Just gave a try to Blender particles. Blender has a "point render" solution named halo. You can map the alpha, color and size... Size take month to render I don't know why. Anyway My first test is a simple ball animation emitting 300 000 particles. The distrotion motion is given by a texture field. Render is very fast because of "point render" mean no geometry.
